If you are a PC gamer and also like the Tolkein universe, you should really go by and pick up a copy of The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of Angmar when it’s released to the public tommorrow (April 24th). I’ve been beta-testing it since December of last year and I can say without a doubt that it is an awesome game experience. It’s based on The Lord of the Rings book rights instead of the movie rights, so you aren’t just going to see a clone of the movie. Personally, I think that makes it a much fresher experience than it would have otherwise been. Now that the non-disclosure agreement has been lifted, I can get into a little more detail.

The playable races are Elf, Man and Hobbit and based on which you choose, you will be able to play as either a Champion, Guardian, Minstrel, Captain, Burglar, Hunter or Lore-Master. There is also monster-play available once you reach level 10. The lore-master and minstrel classes are the closest thing to magic users you will find in the game. This may seem odd for an RPG, but the books never had much magic in them, so it’s appropriate to use it only sparingly in the game as well. The initial level cap will be 50. This is certain to be raised with future expansion packs though. The first expansion has already been announced, so it appears that all the pre-release hype has been encouraging enough to the developers to push on with more content.

As far as gameplay goes, it has all the things you would expect from a modern MMORPG. Questing, grinding, chat, auction system, emotes, crafting, etc. It also has a vast deed system that will reward you with new skills and traits based on various deeds you complete during routine play. For example, you will be rewarded with the title of “Orc-Hewer”, a skill and XP for killing a certain number of orcs in the Lone-Lands part of the map. That helps to keep grinding from being so tedious. I’ll posts some pictures later. For now, just go pick up a copy. I promise you’ll like it.

Me and a friend have been playing the Lord of the Rings TCG(Trading Card Game) for a few years now and it’s a great game. If you are or were a fan of TCG’s or CCG’s you should really check it out. It’s different from most TCG’s because it’s not purely a head-to-head battle type game where you both lay down a foe and then duke it out. It’s more like a board game with cards. Each player has a token that represents them as they go through the game. As the game progresses, your token moves down what is called the “site path” or “adventure path”. That’s just a sequence of “site” cards that are revealed with each progressive turn. The first player to make it through site #9 without having their Frodo card killed wins.

Here is the board layout:

You can see the adventure path on the left side. Each player has a fellowship that includes one copy of Frodo bearing a One Ring card and up to 9 other companion cards. The object is to get your fellowship down the adventure path all the way to site 9 without Frodo being killed. When the game starts, whoever goes first is the “free-peoples” player, and it’s up to them to get their fellowship down the path. When their turn is over, it becomes the other persons turn to move their fellowship. Whoever is not currently the free-peoples player, is playing as the enemy. It’s up to them to play enemy(or “shadow”) cards to slow down or kill the free-peoples player’s fellowship cards.

Here is an example of a free-peoples card and a shadow card:

The main mechanic in the game that makes it all work is this notion of “twilight points”. For almost every action the fellowship performs, the free-peoples player has to put in a number of twilight tokens into the twilight pool. The shadow player then takes out twilight tokens to fund his actions. In other words, the more actions the free-peoples player takes, the more ammo the enemy has to stop him. It’s a great game mechanic, and it matches the actual Lord of the Rings story so well. The smaller the fellowship got and the less noise they made, it became harder for Sauron to find and fight them.

There is also an online version of the game that makes it easier to hook up with other players for a quick match. All in all, if you are into card games or MMORPG’s, you should really check it out.

I like to listen to instrumental music while I work. It’s relaxing and there are no words to interfere with my thinking at a given moment. I am currently addicted to the soundtracks of Jeremy Soule. He writes soundtracks for video games, but trust me if you didn’t know what you were listening to you would never guess that the music was from a video game. Production budgets for games have become so big that the line is blurring between the movie and game industries. Jeremy Soule is a pioneer in bringing movie quality scores to the game market and if you love soundtracks/scores you owe it to yourself to check out his stuff. You can purchase mp3’s of his music through his Direct Song website. The first thing I would get would be the Guild Wars – Factions expansion set score. It is incredible. He also did the music for the upcoming game Prey for Xbox 360.

It’s also one more step toward having our computers take over the world. When I can get fragged by sendmail or jabberd something is wrong. By the way, I am liking digg these days. I know it’s fashionable right now to say that digg is kicking slashdot’s rear but I wouldn’t say that’s entirely true. The thing that is good about slashdot is that you don’t get overloaded with information. Digg moves so fast sometimes that I just can’t keep up. My RSS feed is updating like 100 times a day.

I made an Xbox to USB adapter over the weekend. To make one, just splice the quick-disconnect side of an Xbox controller dongle onto the Type-A side of a USB cable. Solder white-to-white, black-to-black, green-to-green, and then twist and solder the sheathing from the cables together. You can just leave the yellow wire dangling. It’s not used. You can now connect your Xbox controller to your PC as a gamepad. You will need to grab the latest xid drivers for that though. You can also plug in your xbox memory card and use it to backup your gamesaves onto your PC or download new gamesaves and transfer them to your Xbox like an Action Replay. To do that just grab the Action Replay software free from the internet here. Very useful for getting those annual NCAA football roster updates off the web onto your Xbox.
