I love my pipe and my tobacco. The legislation last week that put tobacco regulation under the control of the FDA is just ridiculous. It’s not food, and it’s not a “drug.” And, please, don’t give me this mess that it is a drug. We’re all adults here and it’s pretty obvious what is and is not a “drug”, in the sense that a drug is something that has a truly significant effect on your body chemistry. Sure, cigarettes are harmful and nicotine is addictive, but the same can be said of coffee. Caffeine is highly addictive and drinking really hot drinks every day for a long time can give you mouth cancer. Are we going to regulate it too? This nanny state bull needs to stop. But it won’t. The battle over tobacco and alchohol has been raging for hundreds of years. You can go back and find organized anti-tobacco crusaders even in pre-industrial England. And our Congress has the audacity to think they can have the final word on the issue. They learned nothing from prohibition.
