Linux and Java

I love Linux with a passion but if there’s one thing that gets really
old is having to jump through flaming hoops of death(very complex
death) just to get some simple things installed every time you install
a fresh distro. I am thinking most notably of Java, Flash player, Real
Player, etc. Trying to get a simple media player going on RedHat 6.2
or 7.0 was so frustrating. By that time it should have been
commonplace. I mean, where do I put the flash plugin?
/usr/local/share/mozilla/plugins? /opt/mozilla/plugins?
/usr/share/plugins? It just gets so old. That’s why href="http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/05/05/1215217">this
story about Sun making the Java license play nicer with Linux is
sorely overdue. Maybe now the distro’s can preinstall it and make life
easier for everyone.

[Note to distro developers: Please don’t just install the JRE and
forget about it. Please also take the extra few seconds to link the
proper plugins into the Firefox directory. Thankyou. :)]
