He had done a lot of research in that area. He told us that a young bride had pleaded for Mr. Lincoln to spare her husband's life, as he was captured as a spy. He was hanged and revenge was taken by a friend of the family, John Wilkes Booth. My teacher maintained that they never caught him and the man they captured and hung didn't even look like John Wilkes Booth. I wish I could remember more details, but I was in high school, ya know. I had the pleasure of getting my copy of 1776 signed by David McCollough and telling him about my history teacher who refused to use the county-issued textbooks.
